5 Piercings, Ranked by Healing Time
Quick answer
Typical healing times, fastest to slowest: tongue about 4 weeks, earlobe 6 to 8 weeks, nostril 2 to 4 months, navel 4 months to a year, and ear cartilage (helix, conch, flat) 4 months to a full year. What slows them down is friction and pressure: twisting, products, towels, waistbands and sleeping on the piercing. For every piercing, clean with sterile saline, don't twist or over-clean it, stay out of pools and hot tubs, and leave the jewelry in. A piercing can feel healed before it actually is.
Some piercings heal in a month. Some take a year. The difference comes down to where the piercing is: how much blood flow the spot gets, and how often something rubs, presses or bends it.
Here are five popular piercings ranked from fastest to slowest healing, using typical healing ranges2, with what slows each one down. Everyone heals differently, so treat these as ranges, not deadlines, and follow your piercer's aftercare first.
5. Tongue: about four weeks
Why it's fast: the mouth heals quickly2.
What to watch for: swelling in the first days. That's why the first barbell is longer than you'll wear long term. Once the swelling is down, your piercer will usually swap in a shorter bar, called downsizing1. Go back when they tell you to.
4. Earlobe: six to eight weeks
Why it's easy: the lobe is soft tissue with nothing pressing on it most of the day2.
What to watch for: twisting the jewelry, hair products and phone screens. Leave the jewelry in and alone, and keep products off it1.
3. Nostril: two to four months
Why it takes longer than people expect: your face gets washed, dried and made up every day2.
What to watch for: towels snagging the stud, plus face wash and makeup getting into the piercing. Pat dry around it, not over it, and keep products off the area12.
2. Navel: four months to a year
Why it's slow: waistbands sit right on it, and it moves every time you bend or sit2.
What to watch for: tight clothes and belts. Loose, high-rise clothes that sit above or below the piercing help, and so does not sleeping on your stomach2.
1. Ear cartilage: up to a full year
Why it's the slowest: helix, conch and flat piercings go through cartilage, which heals slowly, typically 4 months to a year2. And ears get pressed on all day.
What to watch for: sleeping on it, headphones and phone calls. Sleep on the other side, try a travel pillow so the ear sits in the hole, and use the other ear for calls. Be patient. Pressure and bumps keep it irritated1.

Every piercing heals the same way
The placement changes the timeline, not the routine. The Association of Professional Piercers recommends the same basics for every piercing1:
- Clean with sterile saline. Use a sterile saline wound wash (0.9% sodium chloride), ideally a spray.
- Don't over-clean or use harsh products. Skip alcohol, hydrogen peroxide and antibacterial soaps.
- Don't twist or play with the jewelry. Wash your hands before you touch it at all.
- Don't submerge it. Stay out of pools, hot tubs, lakes and the ocean while it heals12.
- Leave the jewelry in. Even when it looks healed. A piercing can seem healed before it is, because it heals from the outside in1.
If you see spreading redness, increasing swelling or pain, or you feel unwell, see a doctor.
FAQ
Which piercing takes the longest to heal?
Ear cartilage piercings like the helix, conch and flat, along with navel piercings. Both typically take 4 months to a full year to heal.
Which piercing heals the fastest?
The tongue, at about four weeks. Expect swelling at first, which is why the first barbell is longer. Your piercer will usually downsize it once the swelling goes down.
How long does an earlobe piercing take to heal?
Usually six to eight weeks. Leave the jewelry in, don't twist it, and keep hair products and phone screens off it.
How long does a nose piercing take to heal?
A nostril piercing usually takes two to four months. Towels, face washes and makeup are the most common irritants, so go around it, not over it.
Can I sleep on a new cartilage piercing?
Try not to. Pressure from sleeping on it slows healing. Sleep on the other side, or use a travel pillow so your ear sits in the open center.
How should I clean a new piercing?
With a sterile saline wound wash, ideally a spray. Avoid alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, antibacterial soaps and over-cleaning, and follow your piercer's aftercare instructions.
Can I take my jewelry out once it looks healed?
Not until your piercer says it's fully healed. Piercings heal from the outside in, so one can look and feel healed before the inside is done.
